In September 2005 I visited the Grand Canyon, hiking down the South Kaibab trail into the Canyon to the Bright Angel campground by the Colorado River some 4500 feet below. The return hike was via the Bright Angel Trail back to the South Rim. Walkers were myself, Dan, his girlfriend Christie and her father Mike.

The hike did not go as planned. The first day, we had planned to walk in from the Kaibab Trailhead to the river camp site. What we thought would take us 4 hours actually took us 7 hours. We were running out of water, as it became hotter and hotter as we descended. By the time we reached the river, we were all pretty worn out.

On the second day, we had planned to stay at the river level, and spend some time visiting nearby points of interest. Instead, we all decided as one to spend day two making our way back up. Our permits were changed to allow us to head up to the Indian Garden campsite at the end of day 2. We reached this campsite as light was fading. We had just enough time to pitch tents before dark.

On day three, we started very early, and headed back to to the Bright Angel Trailhead. We finally arrived back at the Canyon rim about 3pm.

A fantastic trip with some awe-inspiring views. Far more strenuous than we had anticipated. I'd go again....
